Their Take:

“Ain’t no way ain’t no weight” is an album influenced by the revolts lead by Nat Turner. Along with the history of Virginia, I wanted to capture boxed thinking. How black people can escape a mindset of being poor. Once enslaved and now free to roam, so to speak. Mental illness is also a neglected priority in black communities and I hope when people hear this, they get help, if they need it. The production is a mix of compressed, robust compositions along with a mellowing tone.

Our Take:

“Ain’t no way ain’t no weight” is a case study in complexity. Over the course of thirteen tracks, Dameetis Brown ambitiously grapples with a slew of complicated themes and stories, linking struggles of the past with struggles of today, and seeking to bridge a divide – one that he realizes isn’t quite as wide as many may think – between what’s history and what’s now. Adding to the complexity of this release are the pure stylist choices Brown makes, pairing high end production and unique arrangements with casual yet measured and pensive vocals to create a freshly experimental vibe. “ain’t no way ain’t no weight” is a provocative and at times challenging listen, but that seems to be the point. This release is not for easy listening; Brown has something important to say, and we have something important to listen to and reflect on.
